Essays Celebrating 25 Years of the Vesak Message to Buddhists

Kodithuwakku Janaka Indunil (ed.)

This is a collection of 21 articles on Buddhist-Christian relations, published through the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (PCID) to commemorate the 25 years that the PCID has sent a message to Buddhists at Vesak. These messages are included at the end of the book. The articles are divided into three sections: History; Thematic Issues, which includes a section on Buddhist Responses to Buddhist-Christian Dialogue; Contemporary Issues. The contributions are written by both Christians and Buddhists and cover a broad range of perspectives and topics. They include 'Pioneers of Buddhist-Christian Dialogue Before Vatican II' (Joseph S. O'Leary), 'Buddhology and Buddhist-Christian Dialogue' (Asanga Tilakaratne, 'Overcoming Fear to be Friends' (Dhammananda - Chatsumarn Kabilisingh), 'Women and Buddhist-Christian Dialogue' (Elizabeth Harris), 'Mixed Marriages and Buddhist-Christian Dialogue: A Sri Lankan Catholic Perspective' (Vimal Tirimanna) and ' "Ethnic" and "Convert" Buddhists in the West and Buddhist-Christian Dialogue' (Thomas Cattoi). The book is both an excellent tribute to the work of the PCID in fostering good Buddhist-Christian relations and also a significant contribution to Buddhist-Christian Studies.
